Aunjanue Ellis: I didn’t come out because no one asked | Entertainment

Aunjanue Ellis did not declare himself bisexual because “no one asked”.

The 53-year-old actress appeared at the Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards with the word “Queer” embroidered on her jacket and wondered why no one was paying attention.

She said, “I thought, why didn’t people pay attention to this?” And I thought they probably thought it said “Queen.” Not that I expected any serious reaction or anything like that. One of my family members noticed it, but no one else.”

The 61st Street star, who was promoting her role in Will Smith’s King Richard at the time, went on to explain that while she’s “very clear” about her sexuality, she doesn’t know how to use it in conversations with Click .

She told Variety: “The way I live, around the people I live with, I talk about it publicly. I am very clear about my bisexuality. I wear it everywhere. But nobody asked. How do you add that to the conversation when I talk about this film? I’m not that kind of girl. My job was to talk about King Richard, the Williams family, these wonderful young women that I worked with, the incredible work of Will Smith in this film.

“[With my jacket] they adapted to my desire to respect the people in my life, and that was one of the things that I also wanted to honor – in this way, and especially among black women.”
