Cambridge City Council has recently made a series of commitments that will impact local sports and tourism.
PGA TOUR CANADA EVENT SPONSORSHIP
The council has approved $5,000 sponsorship for the upcoming PGA Tour Canada event to take place this September.
TOURNAMENT: Fortinet Cup Championship
WHERE: Deer Ridge Golf Club, Kitchener, Ontario
WHEN: from 15 to 18 September
SOURCE OF FINANCING: Municipal Housing Tax Reserve Fund
This event is estimated to bring in between $2 million and $4 million. Given the tournament’s proximity to Cambridge, it is expected to have a significant impact on the local economy.
FOOTBALL COMPLEX ON FOUNTAIN STREET
The Fountain Street Football Complex is one step closer to being a reality. The council awarded the construction contract to Gateman-Milloy Inc. from Kitchener.
WHERE: Corner of Fountain Street and Linden Drive.
WHAT KIND: Sports and entertainment complex in the open air
PRICE: $11.7 million
The construction of this new outdoor sports facility includes sports lighting, high performance artificial turf sports turf and the installation of a premium natural turf football field. It also includes building installation, site maintenance, parking installation and landscaping.
The City is partnering with Conestoga College to supply this new sports facility.
