Tourism Secretary Sarmad Hafeez, who has been put in charge of conducting the safety audit of J&K’s ropeway projects, reviewed the safety protocols put in place on J&K’s ropeways at a high-level officers’ meeting here today.

The meeting was attended by Tourism Director Jammu Vivekananda Rai; J&K Cable Car Corporation Managing Director Ghulam Jilani Zargar; Chief Engineer, KPDCL and JPDCL; Chief Engineer, Mechanical Engineering Department, Kashmir and Jammu; Chief Engineer, R&B, Kashmir and Jammu; Additional Director General, SMVDSB.

In addition to representatives from Sky View Emperian, Patnitop and NC Srivastava, Advisor, NHLML also attended the meeting from New Delhi via videoconferencing.

Speaking at the meeting, the Minister of Tourism emphasized the need for regular and periodic inspections of cable cars, in addition to regular maintenance of machines and other equipment.

In this regard, he instructed the Chief Engineers of Mechanical Wings, who are appointed as Cableway Inspectors under the J&K Air Cable Car Act of 2002 and SRO 433 of 2013, to conduct regular inspections of these cable cars and submit their reports regarding the lifting capacity, operational requirements , maintenance, etc. on an ongoing basis.

Emphasizing the need to ensure the safety of these cable cars, Sarmad Hafiz pointed to the strict adherence to already established SOPs to ensure the safety of passengers, personnel and equipment. He asked cable car operators to conduct regular and timely safety checks and evacuation drills for these cable cars, adding that any negligence in this regard is unacceptable.

During the meeting, representatives of the cable car operators also expressed their opinion on the further improvement of the safety standards of these cable cars.
