Freida Pinto accepted “stereotypical” roles because she wanted more “exposure”.
The 37-year-old actress rose to international fame after starring opposite Dev Patel in Slumdog Millionaire, but Frida admits she made some unfortunate decisions after her breakthrough success.
She shared, “I think in the roles I played right after Slumdog Millionaire, I didn’t necessarily feel like I was given something that was really worth my time and I could really push my acting skills. [with].
“I think those were all the roles that I had to play in order to realize and admit which roles I don’t want to play again. And there’s no other way to know when you’re new to the industry, you kind of have to do all of this, especially when you’re new and at the same time a minority, where people don’t know exactly what to do with you or what role to play for you.”
The Indian actress has been inundated with “stereotypical exotic roles”. But at the time, she felt that “revealing” would serve her well in the long run.
She explained to Glamour.com, “They keep sending you more stereotypical, exotic roles and you look at them and you get sick and you’re like, ‘OK, I think I should do this part just because I have to make money. or, yes, I have to do it just because I want exposure.
“So I look back at those roles and wonder, am I necessarily proud of my performance in this role? Or, you know, I’m proud of what I’ve done? And I think the answer is that I’m not proud, but I’m really glad that I did them, because now the work that I do, the pride that I feel, and every little thing that I put into a big role or small role, so huge because the choice was entirely mine.”
