Laurel’s neighbors voted to introduce a tax on tourism development

Laurel, Miss. (WHLT) – Neighbors in Laurel voted to introduce a tax to promote tourism in Laurel.

Unofficial results showed that 508 people voted in favor of the tax, while 187 voted against.

City leaders said that tourism in the city is on the rise. The tax will allow the city to fund tourism activities through taxes from visitors.

The tax will add 3% to hotel, motel and short-term rental bills.

The leaders said the tax dollars would go towards the work and staff of the Welcome Center, the Welcome Center’s displays and furniture, marketing, printed materials, and sponsorship of events that attract tourists.
