New sports and entertainment facility at Ala Moana Center

HONOLULU (KHON2) – Whether you’re a pro or not, you have the opportunity to enjoy sports right here in the center of Ala Moana at a new location called Sports Box Hawaii.

And to find out more, we’re here with its owners DJ Chinen and Alyssa Tanigawa.

Tanigawa, can you tell us a bit about Sports Box and what people can expect when they come to you?

“Sports Box is Hawaii’s first multi-sport sim designed for entertainment,” says Tanigawa, co-owner of Sports Box.

“We have nine different sports, so I want to say that everyone will find something for themselves. We have baseball, gold, football, dodgeball, frisbee golf, footgolf, wild west shooter and bowling. I think I understood everything,” Tanigawa explained. “And you can bring your friends, family, colleagues. Everyone has a lot of fun.”

Is it safe to say that you guys are one of a kind in Hawaii?

“Yes, I would say that we are the first of its kind, and we definitely teach everyone how to use it and how to have fun,” says Tanigawa.

Chinen, tell us a little about how it happened.

I heard this is your second establishment, so how did Sports Box get started?

“So we opened our first club called Golf Box Hawaii because we saw a big boom in golf during the pandemic,” says Chinen, co-owner of Sports Box.

“Everyone was swinging a club and was fond of sports. And so we saw an opportunity and opened the Golf Box. But once we opened it, new technology came along and we were able to offer eight other sports, so we quickly changed our name to Sports Box and here we are today.”

So let’s say someone sees this and wants to rent a space. How does this process work and what can they expect?

“So you can book online or come in for an appointment depending on availability at our office in Ala Moana and we will secure a spot for you and check you in,” says Tanigawa. “You’ll use real sports venues to hit the virtual screen, and it will project it virtually to show what would happen in real life.”

So, do you rent a room or this box and you can put a certain number of people in each box?

“Yes, each box can accommodate up to six people,” says Tanigawa.

Tell us a little about the other services you provide here.

“The most popular things are parties, so every weekend we have about 10 birthday parties, family reunions, team building, corporate events, corporate bonding,” Chinen says. “All this, we had so many people, many parties, every weekend, and we hope you guys will join us because it brings its own food and drinks.”

To be able to start a company and then expand within six months at the time we live in, what challenges did you have to overcome?

“Probably the biggest issue was the environment,” Chinen says.

“People are becoming more comfortable being in public. We have found that our business and the space we are able to provide provides a good environment for people to take that first step and get together with close friends and family of up to six people, you are at a distance from each. If you have more than six people, you can rent two boxes next to each other. So it’s a nice fun and safe way for everyone to get together.”

So again, if you are a pro just trying to improve your skills, or if you are not good at sports and just want to have some fun, come here at Sports Box Hawaii to get that entertainment.

It is located here in the center of Ala Moan, next to Target, but originally located in Aiea.

Both are open every single day, but it’s a good idea to reserve a spot first.
