NEW YORK (AP) — The highly ranked Top Gun: Maverick continued to rise into its second weekend, falling just 32% since opening with $86 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.
The Paramount Pictures release, which sees Tom Cruise reprise his role from the 1986 original, is holding up better than any film of its kind before. Its modest drop of 50-65% is more typical of blockbusters – the smallest drop for a film that opened above $100 million. Top Gun: Maverick debuted with $124 million over the weekend.
Abroad, the film directed by Joseph Kosinski works even better. Across 64 overseas markets, Top Gun: Maverick dropped just 20% in its second weekend from $81.7 million.
Thanks to word of mouth, amazing reviews, and a worldwide promotional tour, Top Gun: Maverick has already grossed $548.6 million worldwide, making it one of the biggest hits of Cruise’s career. In terms of domestic ticket sales ($291.6 million so far), the Top Gun sequel is already considered the 59-year-old actor’s best film.
While Top Gun: Maverick is unlikely to equal $1.89 billion worldwide with Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man: No Way Home, the pandemic’s biggest box office success, Cruise and company have been hailed for being led the final push. cinema restoration. Paramount delayed its release by two years.
But while No Way Home had almost no big-budget competition in January, Top Gun: Maverick kicks off a string of tighter summer films. Next weekend, Universal Pictures will premiere Jurassic World: Dominion, the culmination of the dinosaur franchise’s sequel trilogy. A week after that, the Walt Disney Company releases Toy Story spin-off Lightyear, the first Pixar release to hit theaters in more than two years.
Top Gun: Maverick, which actually added screens in its second week to boost its record number to 4,751, will soon find itself in an even bigger fight for audience attention.
