A tourism expert said the ban imposed by the office of the president and the cabinet on all government-sponsored lakeside gatherings would negatively impact the hospitality industry.
Mzuzu University Senior Lecturer in Tourism and Hospitality Charles Mhango said the OPC transition would greatly impact the country’s tourism sector.
He said the measures were also put in place between 2009 and 2010 under former President Bingu Wa Mutharika, but were lifted after coastal operators complained.
He said lakeside meetings are the main drivers of the tourism sector and the government appears to be the biggest consumer.
Mhango said the ban would not only affect the tourism sector, but also several other businesses dependent on tourism, such as suppliers of agricultural products and chemicals.
